Jackson was one of those soldiers who viewed life with a good humour and wherever that was possible, that was the way he has written his Boer War experiences. To add to the charm of his book he has peppered the text with his own humorous drawings which naturally ooze authenticity and add greatly to the reader's enjoyment of his narrative. Of course, it is impossible to write a book of war without the unpleasant business of battles and skirmishes making their presence felt and Jackson takes us through campaign, march, camp, skirmish and battle in absorbing detail.
