Excerpt from Second Annual Report of the Park Commission of the City of Allegheny: January 1st, 1870 In September of last year, your Commissioners visited the cities of Philadelphia, New York, Brook lyn, Baltimore, and Washington, for the purpose of inspecting the Parks of those cities. The value of this trip cannot be too highly estimated, and, without attempting to burden this Report with details, it is safe to say that all of the visiting members came back with more enlarged views and liberal ideas as to the proper treatment of our Park Grounds. The governing object of the trip was, in effect, to profit by the experience of other cities, instead of pursu ing the fogyish idea of learning everything at the expense of failures. In relation to the manner of constructing walks, and on the subject of drainage and ornamentation, the time and money spent is as nothing in value to the information received.
