The celebrated French crtic and thinker Saint-Evremond (1614-1703) spent much of his life in exile in London. The letters to Madame de Gouville, printed here for the first time, were long thought to have been lost. Written at the end of his life and despite his material difficulties at the time they display his joy not only in a rediscovered friendship but in life itself. For naturalness, spontenaity and verve, they are matched only by the letters of Madame de Sevigne. Also included is a series of unpublished and interlocking letters to the Abbe de Hautefeuille.
