Anotace knihy

To the heavy secrecy that has surrounded the role France and the French army took in the Rwandan genocide, Guillaume Ancel responds with the truth contained in his field notebooks, a testimony of the missions that he took part in during the Turquoise operation. Breaking the silence is also the story of Ancel's struggle for revealing what truely happend during that summer 1994 and "paying tribute, with all dignity, to the hundreds of thousands of victims whom we were not able to save". An officer of the Rapid-reaction Force, detached within on of the French Foreign Legion units, Guillaume Ancel and his men helped people at risk to be displaced out of the country. Under the guise of humanitarian operation, planned to bring an end to this slaughter, Ancel quickly understood that France was supporting the Rwandan genocidal government (France had indeed formed its army). He describes the erring ways of the French army, tossed back and forth by politicians' decisions, whose motivations still remain secret, as the archives are so far strictly forbidden. This book also unveils some unknown episodes of this "humanitarian" operation, during which France killed, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for some less acceptable ones.A former officer in the Rapid-reaction force, and an alumnus of Saint-Cyr, Guillaume Ancel took notabley part in the UN's 1992 intervention in Cambodia, in the Turquoise operation n 1994 during the Rwandan genocide, and in missions in the former Yugoslavia in 1995 and 1997. He left the land forces in 2005 to join the business world.
