The ton of Runcorn, just across the River Mersey from Widnes, has a very interesting history. It is thought that the earliest reference to the town is in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and an Anglo-Saxon stronghold was situated there. The key developments in the town's history were witnessed during the Industrial Revolution, when Runcorn turned into an industrial hub on the banks of the Mersey. Heavy industry such as soap and alkali works soon moved in, as did major transportation links, including the Bridgewater Canal. Today, Runcorn continues its strong industrial heritage as a cargo port. In this pictorial look at the town through the ages, it is possible to see the growth of this once small village to the town known and loved by locals and visitors alike.
