To seal off the landing of seaborne troops on D-Day, Allied Command decided to drop three airborne divisions on either flank of the assault sector. To the east, the 6th British Airborne Division was assigned a mission to capture bridges over the river Orne, to blow up those over the river Dives, to knock out a German battery and repel any German counter-attacks liable to sweep away this frail bridgehead. This daring military action is recalled and celebrated in this book: Part One: recounts the arrival of the paras and airborne troops brought over in gliders during the night of 5th -6th June. It includes the spectacular capture of several key bridges, including the famous Pegasus Bridge, an operation immortalised in the film The Longest Day. Part Two: recounts the division's hard-fought battle throughout D-Day to repel the German counter-attacks.
