This book aims to discuss and conceptualize the degree of thickness of global international society's primary institutions against the backdrop of the current change processes, domestic and global contestations, and worries about resilience being witnessed over/in each of them. It focuses on the primary institutions as listed by Hedley Bull - layering a discussion of resilience into his analysis. It does not however slavishly follow Bull's rather narrow selection of fundamental institutions but broadens the gaze to also include an analysis of some of those which he did not include, thus providing a fuller picture of today's evolving international society. The authors therefore include chapters on the market and its effects on domestic forms of contestations, the rise of nationalism and populism (including in response to the hegemony of the liberal international order), and the relationship between the primary and secondary institutions of the global international society. Located within an English School (ES) approach, this work adds a distinctive commentary on new and important dynamics of change, contestation and resilience of the existing institutions.
