This book presents influential views in the contemporary study of Buddhist philosophy. It features essays that honor Mark Siderits, one of the field's most eminent scholars. In particular, the contributors explore the problem of personal identity. They also consider the ways in which questions concerning personal identity figure in debates about agency, cognition, causality, ontological foundations, foundational truths, and moral cultivation. The essays cover all core areas of Buddhist philosophy, as well as topics and debates in contemporary Western philosophy relevant to its study. This includes the analysis of consciousness and cognition, the signature Madhyamaka doctrine of emptiness, and the doctrine of the two truths. In addition, readers will learn more about key arguments in the field, including debates about reductionism in Abdhidharma Buddhism and the various forms of Buddhist nominalism. The contributors also discuss the scope of Buddhist ethics and the ways in which Buddhists talk about freedom. Mark Siderits champions a new type of philosophical engagement labelled "fusion-philosophy." This consists in the counterpoising of distinct traditions for the purpose of problem-solving. This book showcases both the impact of Siderits' writings and the reception of his ideas. It will help readers gain insight into a body of work that seeks to build a world philosophy that draws on some of the most enduring sources of philosophical skill East and West.
