The book should appeal to an international audience as well as be irresistible to local readers. Anyone working or with an interest in Australia's arid zone should need ready access to this book. It should be a valuable resource also for university courses, especially at MSc level. There is no equivalent book out there at the moment, and the book should have many colourful illustrations. The challenge of this book is to assemble current knowledge on a particular topic and concepts and principles relating to them, and also to be forward-looking by identifying where there are gaps or inadequacies in knowledge and how future research needs be directed. Lead authors will be encouraged to take such an approach; they can involve any author they consider appropriate. Suggestions are included in the text below, but it remains up to the lead authors to decide who (not) to involve.
