Excerpt from Old "Miscellany' Days: A Selection of Stories From "Bentley's Miscellany" They were etched on steel by George Cruikshank to illustrate various stories which appeared in Bentley's Miscellany from 1837 to 1842, and they have not been worked since impressions were taken from them for Bentley's Miscellany, and they are now reproduced from the original steel plates. The stories which accompany the plates appeared in the Miscellany from 1837 to I843, and were written by Charles White head, the gifted author of Richard Savage;' by Paul Pindar, under which name Yonge Akerman the antiquarian wrote; by Mrs. Gore, the popular novelist and authoress of 'mothers and Daughters'; by Dr. Mackay, author of 'extraordinary Popular Delusions,' and the well-known correspondent of the Times during the late war between the Northern and Southern States of America; by Dalton Barham, son of the far-farmed Ingoldsby by George Soane, Edward Mayhew, Captain Curling, and by W. H. Barker, better known as The Old Sailor,' whose Nights at Sea' had a great popularity in their time, and by many other popular writers of that day, some of whom were present at the Miscellany Dinners in the Red Room in New Burlington Street, dinners referred to in Moore's 'diary,' where with the grace of Luttrell, the sparkling humour of Sam Slick.
