North East Canals Through Time follows on from the previous title by well-known author Ray Shill, North West Canals TT: Manchester, Irwell & the Peaks, as a study of waterways infrastructure, but in this case focusing particularly on Aire & Calder, Calder & Hebble, Huddersfield Broad Canals, Dearne & Dove, and Barnsley, with the view to publish a second North East Canals title covering Sheffield & South Yorkshire Nav, Sheffield Canal, New Junction Canal, Stainforth and Keadby, River Trent, River Idle, Louth Canal. Through a similar 'then and now' study, in line with his previous titles, canal historian Ray Shill explores the construction and technical developments of the canals and their social and economic contributions to the towns and cities they passed through, as well as the architecture they spawned and the legacy they left behind them. Within the pages of this book, the history of the canals will be unfolded to delight and inform all those interested in the canals of the North East.
