Nietzsche has sometimes been labelled a “prophet-philosopher.” Yet we can only regret that his interpreters have split into two key camps: those who have focused on the prophetic aspects of his work while underestimating his impact as a philosopher, and those who have tried to decipher Nietzsche’s philosophy while disregarding its prophetic dimension. As the author of a PhD philosophical thesis on the “future in Nietzsche’s work” of which only the third part was published shortly after he defended his dissertation (L’individu éternel/L’expérience nietzschéenne de l’éternité, Vrin, 1993), Philippe Granarolo had allowed his thesis to collect dust in the back of a drawer ever since, choosing to publish instead numerous articles and a few booklets on the author of Thus Spoke Zarathustra. With this volume, Nietzsche : cinq scénarios pour le futur, he at last resolved to present to a cultured public his original approach to the philosopher to whom he has devoted more than thirty years of his life. For him, Nietzsche is not so much a prophet as he is the most gifted futurologist. The author convincingly demonstrates that the future was indeed Nietzsche’s primary concern – if not his sole preoccupation – inasmuch as even the genealogical works must be read in the context of research geared towards the future of humankind and of civilisation.
