In this reinterpretation of Dvorak's personality and work, Michael Beckerman offers an insight into the composer's life and music and introduces a wealth of new information about the origins of the composer's "New World" symphony. Focusing on the composer's three-year stay in the US - from 1892 to 1895 - Beckerman explores the world behind the legend and his music. The traditional image, of a simple Czech fellow with a flair for composing symphonic and chamber music, gives way to a more complex figure, writing works filled with hidden drama and secret agendas. Beckerman concludes that the composer suffered from a debilitating anxiety disorder, and using Dvorak as a model, he argues that the biographical images we carry of composers condition the way that we approach their music.
