Persistence has been at the heart of every aspect of Peter Derham's life, including his long and successful business career. The Nylex sign, the Melbourne landmark that sits astride the silos near the Punt Road Bridge, was originally known as Derham's folly, named after the sales director of Nylex who instigated it, Peter Derham.Peter went on to become CEO of the company his father started and in 1980, he was knighted for services to industry. Sir Peter left Nylex in 1980 and since then, his life has been busier than ever.He has raised millions of dollars for charities, and he has worked with and lobbied governments of all persuasions to make Australia a better place. He also found the time to be part of Australia's successful 1983 America's Cup challenge, and to visit Antarctica a number of times. Sir Peter's own memories are supplemented by those of his friends Bill Rogers and Freeman Strickland, former Nylex employee Arch Funsten, former chairman of the Alfred Foundation Tony Charlton, and Breast Cancer Network Australia's Lyn Swinburne.Sir Peter is the founder of one of Victoria's finest wineries, the award winning Red Hill Estate.
