Most orthopedic surgeons prefer to read their patients MR imaging studies themselves rather than rely on the radiologists report. However, most orthopaedic surgeons learn how to evaluate MRI studies in an informal fashion during training and clinical practice; this is usually based upon their experience and may not always be the most effective method. The goal of this new book is to teach orthopedic surgeons how to systematically evaluate MR imaging studies of the musculoskeletal system, i.e., teaches the orthopedic surgeon how to read their own MRI.§This is important because a study published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery compared the findings of a radiologist s report and an orthopedic surgeon s preoperative diagnosis, following an examination and reading of the images with actual surgical findings. It was found that the surgeon s preoperative diagnosis was significantly more accurate than the radiologist s report. The study said that the formal interpretation of the MRI scan by the radiologist had inaccuracies and did not correlate with the initial diagnosis.
