Memory of War in France, 1914-45: Cesar Fauxbras, the Voice of the Lowly examines France in the era of world war through the eyes of the veteran, activist and novelist, Cesar Fauxbras. First it explores the French navy of the Great War and the mutinies of the French fleet of 1919 in the memory of the rank and file sailor. Then, it considers the spirit of 1930s France focusing on the experience of unemployment, interwar pacifism, and the politics of the Popular Front. Finally, with the return of war, Fauxbras's work also provides the basis to reflect upon the attitudes of French prisoners of war to defeat in 1940 and of ordinary Parisians under the iron heel of German occupation. His writings provide a unique and illuminating itinerary through this tumultuous period.
