Henry II used Milford Haven as the launch pad for their armies to attack Ireland. The last of these was in the fourteenth century and it wasn't until the middle of the eighteenth century that it was recommended to Parliament that Milford Haven be fortified and that it was an excellent site for the necessary yards and docks to build ships for the Royal Navy. From this point on, Pembroke Dock's affiliation with the Navy and boatbuilding became well established. South Pembrokeshire had too small a population to satisfy the manning needs of the yard. It meant that there was a major influx of working men and their families to the 'New Town' of Pater Church, subsequently renamed Pembroke Dock, to work in the Royal Dockyard. They were mainly from the West Country, the South Wales Valleys and Ireland. This population was boosted in the middle of the nineteenth century, when two building yards, Deptford and Woolwich, in London were closed and the skilled workers were transferred to the Royal Dockyard. It is said and believed that this was the basis of the unique 'Pembroke Dock Accent'. Memories From & Around Pembroke Dock is an anthology of the memories and experiences of people who now live in the area of South Pembrokeshire. With Pembroke Dock celebrating its bicentenary in 2014, this is a book for anybody who knows and loves this part of South Wales.
