This book reviews the basic theory of Ca2+ oscillations (common to almost all cell types), including spatio-temporal behaviors such as waves, and then also some of the theory of mathematical models of electrical bursting in pituitary cells. Through these examples one can see clearly how multiple oscillatory processes interact within a cell, and how mathematical methods can be used to understand such interactions better. The second part of the volume explains the interaction of cytosolic Ca2+ with membrane ion channels that results in the complex patterns of electrical spiking that we see in cells. The two contributions provide excellent examples of how mathematics and physiology can learn from each other, and work jointly towards a better understanding of complex cellular processes.§§Contributors: Richard Bertram , Florida State University; Vivien Kirk , The University of Auckland ; James Sneyd, University of Auckland; Joel Tabak , Florida State University ; Wondimu Teka , Indiana University ; Theodore Vo , Boston University ; Martin Wechselberger , University of Sydney.§
