Wales has been fought over for over 3,000 years and the historical record begins properly with the Roman invasion of the country between AD 48 and AD 78. The local tribes put up a spirited fight but were subjugated in those thirty years and the Romans ruled until AD 383, when they abandoned the country. During the Dark Ages, many battles such as that at Heavenfield, or Hefenfelth, were fought and their locations lost. Some were mere skirmishes and other pitched battles between the Celtic Welsh and the Anglo-Saxons that had invaded the country. The Welsh wars between Edward and the Welsh saw a huge amount of castle building in Wales and the uprising of Owain Glyndwr saw the last pitched battles fought in Wales. Martin Hackett takes us through the numerous battles in Wales, showing us the likely location of each, using a mixture of period reports and modern-day detective work.
