It is gratifying to me that the Lineage Book has become valu able as a work of reference to Genealogical and Historical Socie ties. My interest dates from the time when as Librarian General in. 1897, I aided and was closely associated with the work of the Historian General. As volume followed volume, I have been glad to find an ever increasing number of members who trace their descent from sol diers. We have been familiar with officers of the Revolution, but this is the first recognition of the rank and file. It is they whose feet were bare at Valley Forge, who went over the barricade at Stony Point, who withstood the onset at Cowpens.
