Excerpt from Les Plaideurs Encouraged by this success, Racine resumed work, taking amazz'e for his subject. Although intended for the house of St. Cyr, Allzalz'e, owing to the manoeuvres of Racine's enemies, was not represented. The play was printed in 1691, but, although few read it, every one passed an adverse criticism on it, remarking, not too wisely, that a play written for children could hardly deserve the attention of men. Boileau was among the few admirers of the play, and his judgment was not at fault, when he told Racme that Ażzalz'e was a masterpiece, and that, indifferent as the public seemed, the time would certainly come when it would be as freely and as unreservedly admired as it had been bitterly criticised. The prediction was fulfilled, but unfortunately long after Racine had ceased to live. Of Racine's character we cannot speak so highly as of hisviii racine's life and writings.
