This book is not a typical work of criticism. Instead, it belongs to a well-established tradition of personal reflections on literature by African creative writer-critics, such as Wole Soyinka's Art, Dialogue, and Outrage (1988), Chinua Achebe's Morning Yet On Creative Day (1975), Ndebele Njabulo's South African Literature and Culture: Rediscovery of the Ordinary (1994), and Ngugi wa Thiong'o's Globalectics: Theory and the Politics of Knowing (2012). These collections have considerable documentary value in the critical and literary field and have often become touchstones setting off long lasting debates among creative writers themselves and critics of African literature. Ojaide's contribution to this tradition of writing brings to the table the perspective of what is now recognized as a 'second generation' writer: a poet, and a concerned citizen of Nigeria's Niger Delta area. There is a definite need for these voices to be heard, and this book constitutes a platform for one such voice.
