In conversation with postmodern theory andphilosophical anthropology, this book is adiscussion of academic theology thatsituates the religious understanding of a personwithin a postmodern discussion. The project isinterdisciplinary in nature, asserting its relevancewithin the broader concerns of constructivetheology, philosophy, and literary theory. Theattempt to construct a theory of the person islimited to finite, static moments, stressing thenotion that the self is a series of interpretationsand reinterpretations. The project approaches theproblem of the person not as one of ontology (being)or epistemology (knowing), but rather of meaning.The relationship of the narrative paradigm topneumatology recognizes the need for openness tomeaning, correction, and interpretive inspirationthat is the work of spirit. It stresses thespiritual orientation of the narration of self inthe connectedness characterizing theemergence ofthe self and the other. Spirit becomes the normativecriterion by which an apophatic anthropologyapproaches the self and the other within thereciprocity that characterizes their relationship.
