L'esame delle scelte linguistiche e stilistiche di Festo, che nel suo Breviarium descrisse la storia di Roma dalla fondazione della cittŕ sino ai suoi tempi (IV sec. d.C.), consente di delineare le principali caratteristiche di un documento della prosa tardo-latina: la trattazione č portata avanti non senza preoccupazioni letterarie all'interno di uno schema narrativo, che, pur fortemente contraddistinto dalla brevitŕ, lascia peraltro spazio a particolari storici e geografici talvolta non documentati altrove. Emerge la figura di un letterato, di livello certo non elevato, ma troppo spesso rimasto all'ombra di Eutropio e talvolta a lui accomunato in giudizi che non gli si addicono; oltre alla capacitŕ di sintesi sono apprezzabili in Festo l'originalitŕ nella disposizione della materia e nella scelta dei nessi lessicali, la cura nell'ordo verborum e la padronanza nell'uso del cursus mixtus. Il dettagliato commento č preceduto da un'introduzione sui problemi relativi all'autore e alla sua opera (paternitŕ, datazione, tradizione manoscritta, scopo e struttura, fonti e fortuna) ed č accompagnato da vari indici che ne agevolano una consultazione mirata. * * * Die Untersuchung der linguistischen und stilistischen Eigentümlichkeiten des Festus, der in seinem Breviarium die römische Geschichte von der Gründung Roms bis zu seiner Zeit (4. Jahrhundert n. Chr.) beschreibt, erlaubt es, die wichtigsten Wesenszüge eines Dokuments spätlateinischer Prosa zu skizzieren: Die Erörterung wird nicht ohne literarische Sorgfalt im Rahmen eines narrativen Schemas vorgebracht, das, trotz seiner charakteristischen Kürze, doch Raum lässt für historische und geographische Einzelheiten, die bisweilen nirgendwo sonst bezeugt sind. Die Gestalt eines Schriftstellers zeichnet sich ab, der zweifellos nicht auf hohem Niveau schreibt und der dennoch zu oft im Schatten des Eutropius stand, mit dem ihn bisweilen Meinungen verbinden, die nicht zu ihnen beiden passen. Bemerkens¬wert sind bei Festus neben seiner Fähigkeit zu Synthesen seine Eigenständigkeit in der Disposition des Stoffes und in der Wahl der lexikalischen Verknüpfungen, seine Sorgfalt im Ge¬brauch des ordo verborum und seine Beherrschung des cursus mixtus. Die Einleitung behandelt Probleme, die den Autor und sein Werk betreffen: Name des Verfassers, Datierung, Überlieferung in den Handschriften, Absicht und Struktur, Quellen und Nachwirkung. Der detaillierte Kommentar wird durch verschiedene Indices ergänzt, die die Konsultation erleichtern. * * * The study of the linguistic and stylistic characteristics of Festus, whose Breviarium describes Roman history from the city's foundation to the author's own time (4th century AD), enables us to chart the most important traits of a document of late Latin prose: the discussion is presented, not without attention to literary style, in the framework of a historical schema which, in spite of its characteristic brevity, still leaves room for historical and geographical details, some of them not recorded elsewhere. The figure emerges of a writer who, while admittedly not of the first rank, is nonetheless too often overshadowed by Eutropius; the two are occasionally associated in terms which do not in fact fit them both. Noteworthy features of Festus's style are his capacity for synthesis, his independence in the disposition of his material and choice of lexical combinations, his care in the use of the ordo verborum and his mastery of the cursus mixtus. The introduction examines the problems surrounding the author and his work: the author's name, dating, manuscript transmission, intention and structure, sources and influence. The detailed commentary is augmented with various indexes to aid consultation.
