Anotace knihy

Excerpt from Huron Institute Papers and Records, Vol. 3: Historical Catalogue, Nos. 1 to 2735 I have been honoured by a request to write a few prefatory words for this catalogue. My first visit to the museum of the Huron Institute was twenty three years ago. Since then I have seen it at varying intervals, and have noticed, with appreciation, its advances in size and arrangement. It is one of the three oldest local museums in Ontario and is well and widely known. It received recognition from Sir Henry Miers and Mr. F. X. Mark ham, experts from England, who, six years ago, were making a survey of the museums of Canada on behalf of the Carnegie Corporation. Several local historical societies in Ontario now have museums, but nearly all of them have been handicapped by the lack of suitable space for storage and exhibition. The Huron Institute is particularly favoured in this respect. From the point of View of the historian, a museum is valuable for its tangible and visible records of the past. Its importance in this regard for the teacher of history is very great. It has a value also for others. Dr. C. W. Jeffreys, for example, who is so favourably known for his paintings of historical subjects, and who takes particular care to have the details of his pictures correct, has found in museums information which he would have had difficulty in obtaining elsewhere.
