In truth, at the time when he, then much younger, was studying French law, the word adultery produced a curious effect upon him. That word, which fills an immense Space in the Code, never appeared to his imagination with out bringing in its train a lamentable procession. Tears, shame, hatred, fear, secret crimes, bloody wars, families without heads, dire disaster, took visible shape and reared their heads suddenly be fore him when he read that sacramental word.
