After having conquered Gaul, as France was then called, they must needs have Britain too so in the year 55 before our present era, Julius Caesar, their general, fitted out a żeet, with which he crossed the Channel, and landed on the coast of Kent. But the ancient Britons, though rude and barbarous, loved their independence, and fought bravely for it; and the Romans did not then.
