The discovery of the structure and function of DNA and the cracking of the genetic code have led to rapid advances in gene therapy and screening and diagnosis on a molecular basis. While initial therapy has been for patients with single gene defects, there is increasing interest in acquired disease, using the approach to assess or treat cancer.
