The evolution of the relaxin-like peptide family has longbeen controversial; points of contention include the existence ofan invertebrate relaxin and the absence of a ruminant relaxin.Presented here is the first complete evolutionary analysis of therelaxin-like peptides and their two distinct receptor types. Therecent explosion of genomic data provides an excellent resource tostudy the evolution of gene families and their co-evolution withinteracting proteins. The analyses discussed here were able toidentify a novel receptor, provide insight into the physiologicalimportance of various interactions between peptides and receptorsand clarify the evolution of a clinically relevant family ofpeptide hormones. The relaxin-like peptide system provides afascinating insight into the evolution of gene families andhormone-receptor systems as well as highlighting the power ofevolutionary analyses of genomic data to study biologicalsystems.
