The book's four main units contributes significantly to the field of environmental planning. The first part of the book, entitled 'New Horizons', describes the physical aspects of marine and coastal environments with their particular planning challenges. The next part presents accepted approaches for planning these areas. Section III discusses state-of-the-art tools and technologies commonly employed by planners such as decision support tools, public participation and marine spatial planning. The last part (V) entitled "Implementation", presents case studies that relate to the methods, tools and methods described previously in the book.
