The use of aluminum is at present limited to long distance transmission lines or to large bus bars, and is selected on account of its being much lighter than copper. It is not used for insulated conductors because Of its comparatively large cross section and consequent increase in amount of insulation necessary. Other metals may serve to conduct electricity but they are not applied to the general transmission of energy.
