The present collection presents in its totality and exemplary history of pre-'novel' narrative or pre-eighteenth-century narrative, and in so doing sets out to document the wide rage of narrative forms available through the application of a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches. Rather than aiming at definitional homogeneity the purpose has been to bring together traditional scholarly approaches and contemporary critical practices in a survey of the field of narrative. Several of the contributors focus on various forms of written literature, such as epics, sagas, and ballads, where the aspects of oral composition and delivery, as well as concomitant socio-cultural factors are brought to bear upon the textes as we know them.
