This book addresses three important topics---competition, innovation, and growth---using unique data and cases in the Japanese economy. First, it provides a better understanding of competition between firms, including collusion and merger and acquisition (M&A), which will suggest how competition policy is implemented. Second, it presents how to measure innovation and whether competition generates innovation in the economy. The book also examines the effects of alliance and human capital on innovation. Third, it discusses how competition and innovation are useful to promote firm growth that will lead to industry and economic growth. The authors also examine the performance of multinational firms and new ventures and discuss industry growth from the perspective of macro economy and international comparison. The estimation results and case studies suggest that competition and innovation are inevitable to stimulate the stagnated Japanese economy, which implies that more attention should be paid to innovation through competition for economic policy in the nation.
