Anotace knihy

Excerpt from Cicero's Essays on Old Age and Friendship, Also His Paradoxes Marcus Tullius Cicero stands first among the prose writers in Roman literature, and as an orator ranks second only to Demosthenes. Being fortunate enough to be born of wealthy parents, he was able to secure the best educational advantages the country afforded. At an early age he appeared to possess talents which gave promise of making him famous. His father, therefore, moved from Arpinum, where Cicero was born, and took up his residence in Rome, in order that his son might receive the best education possible. Here Cicero studied the Greek writers under the poet Archias, who inspired him with that literary taste which made him so distinguished among the men of his time. Later on, under Scćvola, the augur, and after his death under his kinsman, the pontifex, Cicero laid the foundation of a profound knowledge of legal principles which attributed greatly to his success in the defence of accused persons. It was the custom among the Romans for young men upon reaching manhood to spend a portion of their lives in military service.
