Pain is the most frequent cause of impairment and disabilityin the United States. Chronic pain can be described as a complexinteraction of biological and socio-cultural factors. The generalpurpose of this work is to describe and analyze the hegemonicnature of physical therapy practice, in the United States, as anagent of Western/Biomedicine in the treatment of working women withchronic pain using a critical medical anthropological(CMA) lens. Itwill be demonstrated that for physical therapy the body, especiallythe female body, is to be corrected, regulated, placed undersurveillance, disciplined, and is a commodity to be controlled, allthe while transforming women with chronic pain into consumers ofthe multibillion dollar chronic pain industry. The examination andanalysis of chronic pain through a CMA lens provides a correctiveto the biologically reductionist diagnostic and treatment approachthat is characteristic of Western/Biomedicine.
