Excerpt from Charlotte Medical Journal, 1912, Vol. 65: A Southern Journal of Medicine and Surgery While it is undoubtedly true that a cer tain proportion of inguinal hernias in young children are cured by the persistent wear ing of a truss, yet the mechanical treatment requires such care and watchfulness upon the part of the mother, while the results of operative treatment are so favorable that it does not seem good practice to continue the use of a truss after the first few years of life have passed without a cure being effected. Even where a cure is apparently brought about, the effect is often only temporary, just as some subjects with an open funicular process do not develop hernia until mature life, and what we have diagnosed as an acquired, at operation is found to present the characteristics of a congenital hernia.
