Each part in this series provides an account of the facts of a particular author's life and immediate context, together with a review of modern scholarship. This is supported with a dated and classified list of manuscripts and editions, a key bibliography, and appendices of sources. The work combines a biography of the medieval author with the information needed for further research. The present volume opens with William Caxton, famous as the first English printer, but also of major importance in shaping late medieval English culture. Next is a study of Bishop Reginald Pecock, a contentious theologian caught up in the politics of the reign of Henry VI. This is followed by accounts of what is known of two Scottish poets of the 15th century, Robert Henryson and William Dunbar. The final part deals with John Capgrave, whose industry in the cause of Augustinian friars, if perhaps not his intellectual capacity, has left a corpus of particular importance for studying the development of English.
