Anotace knihy

Excerpt from A Vindication of the Address to the People of Great-Britain, on the Use of West India Produce, With Some Observations and Facts Relative to the Situation of Slaves: In Answer to a Female Apologist for Slavery We ought to reprove it: and this we do net to the utmofi of our power, unlefs we refrain from it ourfelves-xepri mand it in others-avoid any aét which we think may in duce another to purfue itur'ejeé'c the pleafures and profits which immediately aerne from it - and ufe every lawful means to prevent it. I By way of extreme unc'tion to your Cxpiring caufe, you fuggeli the idea, that our combination looks very much like pérfecution that the planters will think themfelves perfecuted. What Guinea pirates or Welt India planters may fay or think, can be of very little importance to hoa nell, difinterefted men. They have had their good things 5 and the poor victims of their avarice, their evil things. It is time Ilse} lhould be comforted, even though their Opprefi'ors lhould be tormented. When Mr. Palmer's plan for conveying the mail was firfi agitated, you did nor call that doing evil, that good might come, (at leal't not from the prefs.) You did not then urge, that many children were employed in driving, and imanyme chanics in conflruéling the wretched wheelbarrows, by which letters were thelf conveyed. You did not even think of the poor innkeepers, co'ach-mafiers, and others, who had employed large capitals in travelling accommor dations. Much lefs did 011 think ofcalling thattradefinan a perfecntorwho refufed to negociate a bill, or to purchafe a cażtet ofdiamonds, which had been l'tolen from a public nce. You never fuggefied the'argument, that, e means and manner ofcarrying on: bufinefs bed longed to the man himfelf, and was what his culiomershad 0 do with. Why, then, is our abl'tinence from uce of żavery called perfecution Is it lefs a crime on earth, and good-will to men Becaufe experience evinces that unconditional żavery is the parent of anarchy, the nnrfe of every vice, and the bane of every virtue; that it was never'foflered but to gratify the vileż; paliiotzs of the heart; nor has it ever found an advocate in any lone/2' man.
