In June 2007 the Department of American Studies at the University of Innsbruck, the first of its kind in Austria, celebrated its 50th anniversary. The papers that were presented on the occasion are printed in this volume. Apart from an outline of the beginnings and the development of American Studies in Innsbruck, the papers concentrate on American issues from various perspectives, such as political science, history, geography, and American cultural studies, as well as on the more recent focus of the Department in medical humanities, law and the humanities, and business/ management and the humanities. The papers are written by colleagues from Innsbruck University and professors from various American universities.
