1940 began with a whimper and ended with a bang. The war in the air and on land had not gone beyond the odd small raid and sabre-rattling at the border of France and Germany. In April all hell was let loose as the Germans invaded Norway and Denmark. The Allies had had prior warning and had planned a counter-invasion, landing in Narvik and the Faroe Islands. The Allied attack is doomed to failure and, with the loss of HMS Glorious, the British are without air cover for the evacuation. On 10 May, Blitzkrieg in the West starts, with the invasion of France and the Low Countries and the evacuation at Dunkirk and other channel ports through the end of May and June. By July, the Battle of Britain has started and Britain stands alone. The battle of Britain ends wells for Britain, as does the North African campaign, which sees much of the Italian army in Africa destroyed. The Blitz of British towns and cities continues and the year ends with the bombing of London, and damage to St Pauls.
