These are some of the stories told with sympathy and realism by Henrik Pontoppidan (1857-1943) and translated into English by John Lynch. Pontoppidan is hardly known in Britain, but is famous in his native Denmark as a realist writer of fiction and the winner in 1917 (jointly with Karl Gjellerup) of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
