Written in AD 61, "Papyrus Harkness" is a near-complete demotic text originally owned by a woman called Tanawerouw. The text itself describes a series of mortuary rituals performed for Tanawerouw, who died on February 16th AD 61, and would have been buried with her in her tomb to prolong the rituals' effect. Somehow, the papyrus made its way onto the Cairo antiquities market, where it was bought by Howard Carter in 1922. This volume is the first complete edition of "Papyrus Harkness", and describes its appearance and state of preservation, as well as summarising what is known of the original owner and her family. There is also analysis of the text's structure, composition and ritual significance, followed by a transliteration and translation. The papyrus is shown on eight fold-out plates at the back of the book.
