Excerpt from Miscellanea Invernessiana: With a Bibliography of Inverness Newspapers and Periodicals The papers forming the present Miscellanea, though thrown together without any special plan or method, will be read with interest by lnvernessians at home and abroad, as afford ing vivid glimpses of their native spot, its people, and their habits, in times long gone by. With the appended Biblio graphy of Inverness Newspapers and Periodicals, this volume will also form a not unimportant contribution to the existing, but altogether too meagre and fragmentary, works on local history. Readers familiar with the lnverness of today will find here matter for amusing and interesting comparison and contrast between the condition of society now and that which prevailed in what are called the good old times. Great as the changes have been as regards the people and their habits, what lnverness owes to Nature - and it is admitted on all hands that she is liberally endowed in that respect - remains un changed. The poetic tribute to the beauty of the town with which the volume opens is as appropriate now as when it came from the pen of its scholarly author, Dr. Arthur Johnston, of Aberdeen, more than two centuries ago; and every summer brings hundreds and thousands of visitors prepared to re-echo the poet's enthusiastic appreciation of the charms with which Nature and the genius of the place have conspired to grace the town. Nor has lnverness herself lacked for admiring citizens gifted with power to move the muses into rapture over her lordly river and her picturesque and beautiful Islands. In past years she could point to her Andrew Frasers, her Jamie Patersons, and her John Macraes, the specimens of whose rhyming effusions in the following pages prove their title to stand side by side with those who have maintained the apostolical succession of her bards down to our own day.. A valuable and instructive paper by John Anderson, w.s., on Macbeth's Castle leaves the question of the exact site of the building an open one, and the subject still continues to occupy the attention of our Scientific Society and Field Club, and of the more sanguine and less fastidious compilers of our tourist guides.
