This book proposes to introduce the reader to the poetry of Jorge Teillier (Chile, 1935-1986). Commonly referred to as poesie larica (poetry of the far or hearth), Teillier's poetry looks to the countryside, to familiar domestic objects in the provincial home, and to the folklore of an illusive past as a way of restoring meaning to individual existence. Traditionally scholars have judged poetry of the lar (and Teillier's poetry in particular) as an anomaly in Chilean literary tradition because of its apolitical stance. The first half of this study shows, however, that Teillier's poetry belongs to a wider literary tradition that has its roots in Heidegger's anti-technological humanism. The author shows how Teillier's plea for a rethinking of the city and for a type of rootedness borne of a common fraternity of things also links him with Rainer Maria Rilke (in whose earliest work we find the origin of the theme of the lares). The second part of the book establishes the philosophical implication of poetry of the far and presents an in-depth analysis of Teillier's oeuvre through the themes of childhood memory and the poetic imagination.
