Frenchmans Cap - one of the world's great wilderness destinations - comes vividly to life in this collection of stories which define the mountain's journey from its geological genesis through colonial times to the modern era. Along the way, a colourful procession of personalities join in: escaping convicts and bushrangers, explorers and gold fossickers, miners and piners. More recently, this towering quartzite peak has increasingly attracted photographers, rock climbers and bushwalkers. It has been a journey often accompanied by struggle and controversy, as protesters and nature lovers from all over the world fought to preserve this unique wilderness for future generations. A well known feature to the Tasmanian Aboriginal people, Frenchmans Cap continues to both challenge and inspire today.
