Excerpt from A Treatise on Midwifery: Developing New Principles, Which Tend Materially to Lessen the Sufferings of the Patient, and Shorten the Duration of Labour It is of importance to notice the various effects of the above paroxysms, and particulary those more immediately connected with the final result, the ex pulsion of the child and its appendages. These ef feets may be detected, First by examining the uterus with a hand placed upon the abdomen of the patient. The tumour of the gravid uterus, as felt though the sides of the belly, may be termed the utero abdominal tumour, to distinguish it from one felt within the pelvic cavity, on making an examlna tion per vaginam, and which will be designated the Mara-vaginal tumour. If the hand is applied to the belly immediately before a paroxysm comes on, the utero-abdominal tumour is found in a soft and żaccid state parts of the child may indeed be felt, presenting harder masses, but the general sensation8 ON the parturient actions.
