Near to the place fome {hepherds informed him where Laban dwelt, and that his family was well, and that Rachel his daughter was jolt coming to water her flock. At her coming up, he kindly faluted her, helped her to water her żock, and told her that he was the fon of Rebekah her aunt. She haltily ia formed her father: he came and con duéted Jacob to his houfe. When Jacob had continued here about a month, Laban propofed to give him wages. Jacob offered feven years fervice for Rachel his younger, but molt beautiful daughter; and with great cheaifulnefs be fulfilled his en gagement, from the great love which he bare to her. When the marriage night came, as a providential pun ifhment to Jacob for deceiving his dim-eyed father, Laban condufied Leah his elder daughter, whofe beauty was far inferior, to Jacob's bed, inllead of Rachel. Next morning the cheat was difeovered; and Jacob warmly chode with his uncle about it. He pretended that it was con trary to the cullom of their country to marry the younger daughter firlt; but, marking himfelfa greedy wretch, told him he might have Ra chel too for leven years more fervice. This Jacob agreed to. Of his two wires, Jacob much preferred Ra chel but God favoured Leah with children, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah and, it feen's, with a thank ful heart, while Rachel was barren.
