A young man of 24, newly qualified with a degree in Classics from King's College Cambridge, joined the British Colonial Service early in 1939 and was posted to Nigeria. In Cambridge he left behind his girlfriend studying medicine at Newnham College. These are his letters to her --- a one-sided conversation of love, of jealousy, of separation, and of life in the depths of the African bush. At the end of 1941 they married and she finally joined him in Nigeria at the end of the war. They remained there until Nigerian independence from British rule in 1960. Together they had six children. She died in 1977, having known only three of their grandchildren. He survived until his 85th year taking joy in his sixteen grandchildren (and his first great-grandchild). In his last few years he transcribed these letters, to form a legacy to his progeny.
