Excerpt from Vincent van Gogh Briefe Vincent van Gogh wurde 1853 zu Ciroot-Zundert, einem Dorf in der niederländischen Provinz NordBrabant, als Sohn eines Pfarrers geboren. Er sollte, wie zwei seiner Onkel, Kunsthändler werden und war bis zu seinem 23. Jahre im Haag, in London und Paris im Geschäft von Cioupil tätig. Von Paris ging er wieder nach England und war dort kurze Zeit schullehrer auf dem Lande. Aber auch das befriedigte ihn nicht; er wollte nun in Amsterdam Theologie studieren. Als auch dieses Studium ihm nicht bot was er suchte, zog er nach Belgien, wo er als Evangelist bei den Minenarbeitern auftrat. Dort in der Borinage fing er an zu zeichnen.
