Whatever next - a footballer writing a novel! And a good novel and good footballer at that. ?Martin Dobson played more than 600 league and cup games in a 20-year career as a midfielder during which he played for Burnley, Everton and Bury as well as five times for England. Dobson, the Academy Director at Premier League Burnley, has written a novel, aimed at 12 year olds and upwards who want to find out about the life of a professional footballer. ?The book follows the progress of two boys who could scarcely be more different. One, Jake, from a stable background, was scouted when he was at secondary school, joining the under-13 squad at Premier League Burding Town. ?The other, Ricky, from a single parent family, was battered by his mother's partner and turned to drugs. But a concerned schoolmaster rescued him and after visiting a US soccer school Ricky joined Mexter in the Championship. ?Jake meanwhile overcame a serious injury and was made first team captain while still a teenager. For a while the fame might have gone to his head but he recaptured his grip on reality and he book ends when both boys make it to the FA Cup final. ?The National Literacy Trust, who have a project for reluctant readers called "Reading the Game", stress that the detail in football novels has to be accurate to appeal to teenagers. Dobson, who acknowledges it is very unusual for ex-footballers to pick up a pen or at least turn on the word processor, is particularly good on the detail. ?After being player-manager at Bury he was briefly manager at Bristol Rovers before becoming Academy Director at Bolton Wanderers. Ironically that was the club left with egg on their face after they told a 19-year-old centre forward that he would never have a professional career - his name was Martin Dobson. ?We believe Martin is the first ex-England player to have a novel published. Terry Venables, now England assistant coach, wrote "They used to play on Grass" but that was co-written with Gordon Williams. Steve Bruce, Birmingham City manager and ex-Manchester United centre half, had three thrillers published - but he never played for England.
